CATHEDRAL BELLS

(N. Assirati)

Written by Nick who says; "I hadn't written a song for a very long time. It's funny how the alchemy of being in a band gets the creative juices flowing again. I had been listening to a Bonny Prince Billy album that Pete had given me and I wanted to write a song about where I was and how I got there. I got too close to the song and kept bringing different verses to rehearsals each week until the others got frustrated with me and told me go back to the first draft. They were of course right. See if you can spot snatches of Nic Jones, The Watersons, and Robert Burns".

I love my wife and the quiet life
With my children 'round my feet
A long, long way from my childhood days
And my brothers in the street
We'd play and run in the summer sun
In the alley where we lived
Time moved on, now the peace has gone
And the traffic fills that street

Sights and smells, cathedral bells
In the schoolyard where we played
Church on Sunday, hand on heart
That was where we learned to pray
I left that town when the rain came down
And my family fell apart
I looked to find some peace of mind
And a way to fill my heart

I worked the land as a farming man
And I found another path
The sacred way in the everyday
If I listen to my heart
The sky is blue, the fields in view
And the forest fills my soul
All is fine as her hand holds mine
And the broken man is whole
